Texstyle has quietly been producing custom furniture, carpet and leather for the leading architecture and design firms in the U.S. since 1983. Working with architectural giants such as Skidmore Owings and Merrill, Gensler and Robert A.M. Stern, Texstyle has established itself as an important supplier for corporate, hospitality, university, restaurant and residential projects.
Institutions and businesses as diverse as the McGraw-Hill chairman’s offices, HBO, the Aladdin Casino, and Ivy League schools including Yale, Princeton and Dartmouth have ordered from TexStyle’s catalogue or have specified custom pieces.
“Half of our business is custom,” says Texstyle founder Jamie Stern. “We provide high quality, well priced products because we have tight partnerships with our factories.”
While Stern’s name may not be well known outside of production circles, he has been working in the upholstery business for more than 20 years. He started with Boris Kroll Fabrics in 1979, at a time when there were only two major manufacturers producing upholstery, Kroll and Jack Lenor Larsen. Several years later, Stern started representing fabric companies as an independent sales rep, taking on such clients as Edelman Leather.
In 1990, Stern started Texstyle as a business offering custom-ordered furniture, carpet and fabrics, including leather. “Ultimately, I saw the way furniture and textile companies were being run, and I felt I could do it better,” Stern says. “I thought to create a more user-friendly company with a deep understanding of architect and designer needs.”
Stern has developed enduring relationships with Gensler, Falcon jets, Rowland Design, GBQC Architects, Tom Stringer Inc. and Vicente Wolf, because he delivers. “We’ll take any requirement in the world and accommodate the designer, without making him wait 18 weeks and pay a small fortune,” Stern notes. |
